What is Abdominal Pain?

Abdominal pain is a feeling of discomfort along with pain in the part of the body between lower chest also pelvis.

In detail, The abdominal cavity consist various structures like stomach, liver, gall bladder, small intestine, large intestine, pancreas, kidney, cecum, appendix, ureter, spleen also possesses abdominal muscles.

The whole abdomen is divided in to 9 regions which are, right hypochondrium, epigastrium, left hypochondrium, right lumber, umbilical, left lumber, right iliac, hypogastrium and left iliac. Additionally, a person can feel pain in any of these regions.

Cause

Cause of abdominal Pain:

Peptic ulcer –

Generally, Mucosal ulceration near the acid bearing regions of the gastrointestinal tract, pain characteristically sharply circumscribed to an area about 1 inch in diameter between xephoid also umbilicus.

Cholecystitis –

In brief, attacks of epigastric pain with tenderness over gall bladder.

Carcinoma of pancreas –

mid gastric pain, steady and either dull or paroxysmal colicky pain

Carcinoma stomach –

Basically, Daily discomfort along with pain in the abdomen

Acute appendicitis –

Severe colicky pain initially felt in umbilical region also after few hours the pain localizes to the right iliac fossa.

Acute pancreatitis –

Severe backache also tenderness in the epigastrium

Irritable bowel syndrome –

Post prandial type of pain which is especially related to meal

Hiatus hernia –

Causes specifically epigastric pain.

Abdominal angina –

Due to chronic intestinal ischemia in which there is post prandial pain usually cramping also radiates to the back.

Carcinoma colon –

Pain especially in the right side below the level of umbilicus

Bilateral salping –

Oophoritis – generally, Lower Abdominal pain on both side

Torsion of the ovarian cyst –

Specifically, Produces very severe Abdominal pain.

Other causes –

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of Abdominal Pain:

Blood test i.e.– Complete blood count, pregnancy test, blood culture, Urinalysis

X ray abdomen – To diagnose renal stone, also intestinal obstruction etc

Abdominal CT scan – To evaluate internal organs also tissues, useful to detect tumor infections, renal stones, appendicitis.

Abdominal MRI – To diagnose especially abnormal growth tumors

Ultrasound of Abdomin– To assess specifically the structures with in the abdomen, used to evaluate gall bladder stone, renal stone, ectopic pregnancy etc.

Case Presentation

Case in Homeopathy for Abdominal pain:

This is a case of a 15 years old girl. In July 2005 she drank fruit juice from a roadside vendor and within two days she developed severe offensive diarrhoea. She started feeling very thirsty and the next day she developed very high fever – 104° F, severe vomiting and intense pain in the abdomen. On carefully investigating the details of her suffering, we found the following totality.
She was feeling extremely hot in spite of running 104°F temperature. She wanted the fan to be very fast and didn’t want her abdomen to be covered. Additionally, she would lie down under the fan and would lift her dress all the way up. She didn’t want anything to be tied around the waist, not even her regular undergarment. Also, she desired to drink cold water. She had no appetite and would vomit on eating. She felt intense nausea from smell of food. As there was no clear totality coming up as yet, so we gave her placebo for a day and decided to review any further development of symptoms the next day. Also, as we clinically suspected infectious hepatitis, we asked for her Liver function test, which was highly abnormal.

On going into further details the next day and on listening to her patiently, we found that her vitality was throwing peculiar symptoms. She now complained of severe pain localized in the liver region. Her mother told us that she wanted to be rubbed in that region and that was the only thing making her feel better from the pain. “She wants us to rub gently up and down.” While we took her for the physical examination, we asked her to demonstrate exactly how she wanted to be rubbed and where.

She was very specific and clearly mentioned that she felt immensely better by stroking the liver region. Besides this, she still felt nausea from the smell of food. Her desire for cold water was persistent. She was feeling very hot and wanted the fan full. Stools were watery and offensive. Urine was dark yellow in colour. Tongue had thick, white coating. Emotionally she was feeling “tired of this illness.”
